رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً
وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Our Lord! Grant us goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter, and save us from the chastisement of the Hellfire [2:201]

RAMADAN 1442 / 2021

Alhamdulillah, the blessed month of Ramadan is finally here!

Announcements, events, timetables, as well as other related information and resources will be made available through our website, in the Ramadan section.

With due love and respect for all others,  Alqalam Islamic Community Center will be following the Hilal Council of Canada. This is for the sake of organization, consistency, and ease in following the traditional method of moonsighting. We recognize that other individuals and committees may decide to do otherwise when determining Ramadan and Eid – but differing should never lead to division, and all are always welcome at our center.

Due to the current pandemic-related restrictions, Tarawīh prayers are by registration only. All available spaces have already been filled. Should anyone wish to put their name on our waiting list, please visit the center in-person during the daytime. In the meantime, those who can not attend are strongly encouraged to pray at another masjid or even at home with their families.

For managerial purposes, the center’s doors will automatically lock each evening shortly after Maghrib prayers; thereafter, only those who have registered will be permitted to enter, up until the commencement of the Isha prayer. Those who come too late will not be allowed to enter, even if registered.

Please be considerate – DO NOT knock on the door or tap on the window and thus disturb those who have already started praying.

If you are experiencing ANY symptoms of illness, please be considerate of the community and help us keep our center safe by praying at home.

On Sunday, April 11, 2021, our local imam, Sh. Aamir, explored practical preparation tips to make the very best of this upcoming Ramadan, bi ithnillah.

The program was recorded, and is available on the ICOYG YouTube channel.

In compliance with the Government of Ontario’s lockdown restrictions mandated to reduce the risk and spread of COVID-19, our center will remain open with the following conditions:

  • No more than TWENTY-ONE (21) persons are allowed inside the center for the same religious service at one time. This is in accordance with the latest updates legally permitting up to FIFTEEN PERCENT (15%) of the center’s pre-pandemic normal capacity.
  • All persons entering or remaining in the premises must wear a mask or face covering as required under City of Toronto by-law 541-2020.
  • All congregants must bring and use their own personal prayer mat. Disposable paper mats are available as needed.
  • All are legally required to maintain social distancing (atleast 2m) from others. Unfortunately, this includes during prayers.
  • All are requested to seek further guidance with regards to the latest health recommendations as per local health authorities.

NOTE: All individual visitors to the center are collectively responsible to amicably uphold the aforementioned rules for the greater benefit of the community. If not, the center may be forced to close indefinitely.

REMINDER:  If you have traveled internationally within the last 14 days, have been exposed to someone properly diagnosed with COVID-19, are vulnerable due to underlying health issues, or are experiencing ANY symptoms of illness, please pray at home and seek medical advice.

  • Unfortunately, due to the current lockdown restrictions our Friday prayer services (Salat-ul-Jumu’ah) are limited.
  • Accordingly, we will be hosting TWO (2) entirely separate congregations, during both of our allocated time slots for Jumu’ah.
  • Each separate congregation will be limited to either the main floor or the basement, using the main and rear entrances respectively. Due to the technicalities associated with the current government-enforced restrictions, neither of the two congregations are to interact with one another, as stipulated by Toronto Public Health.
  • Accommodation is prioritized for the most regular local attendees – otherwise, it is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

May Allah forgive us, and alleviate us of the tribulations that have befallen us so that we may establish prayers and worship Him in the way that pleases Him most. Amīn.

As we approach the warmer seasons, it is important to always be aware of when and where to pray as you go about your day.

Join us throughout the week for brief, well-needed, practical reminders based on the Qur’an and Sunnah.

We are currently developing our new website to keep our community up-to-date. Please pray for its successful completion – the work is slowly but steadily in-progress!

Shaykh Aamir was officially appointed as our full-time Imam since April 2020. We are pleased to have him with us.

By the grace of Allah, our center comfortably accommodates both brothers and sisters respectively for all five daily prayers and other important religious services.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:

Considering the current government restrictions in relation to the COVID-19 outbreak, please note the following:

So long as the mandated precautionary measures can be properly upheld, Alqalam Islamic Community Center will be OPEN for congregational prayers. Within the limits, all other programs, services, and activities are being maintained as much as is safely and practically possible, walhamdulillah

*In addition to the aforementioned requirements, all visitors to the center are asked to uphold the following recommendations:

1. Please perform wudhū beforehand as the communal washroom and wudhū facilities are ideally not to be used, although they are available for those who need to use them.

2. Avoid hand-shaking and all other forms of unnecessary physical contact with others whilst on the premises.

3. If you wish to read the Qur’an, please bring a personal pocket-sized copy or use your phone. Do not touch any of the books or bookshelves.

4. The center is open from 1:30pm until after Isha prayers.

5. If the center reaches maximum capacity at any given prayer time, the doors will be locked until the prayer is finished. Those who wish to wait outside are requested to avoid crowding the area, or disturbing others by tapping on the glass. If one finds the door open but the maximum capacity has already been reached, such an individual must leave immediately and is encouraged to wait outside if it is deemed safe to do so.

In addition to the above measures, please earnestly turn to Allah, increase in your supplications, seek forgiveness, recite the Qur’an, give charity, and busy yourself with other good deeds whilst avoiding sin.

We ask Allah to heal those who are sick, to protect those who are healthy, and to save us from all harm in these unprecedented times.

May Allah reward you for your patience, understanding, and continuous supportAmeen.

DISCLAIMER: Failure to comply with the above measures and additional directives by the authorities, our Imam, and volunteers may result in legal consequences and/or denied entry. While public safety is our highest priority, we can not guarantee anyone safety from COVID-19 or any other health-related issues. Alqalam Islamic Community Center shall not be held liable for any health complications arising from visiting our facility. Any congregant or visitor who wishes to attend does so at their own risk. If any visitor(s) to the center or community member(s) fails to act responsibly, the center may be forced to employ tighter restrictions or officially close.

For all prayers, accommodation is on a first-come, first-serve basis. If the center has reached maximum capacity given the restrictions, please come back at a later time.

Please be considerate – DO NOT tap on the window and disturb those who have already started praying. If you notice that the limit has already been reached, please exit the building until a space opens up.

May Allah reward you for your understanding.

*Presently, the center is open from 1:30pm until Isha.

*Prayer time changes are announced on Saturdays, to be implemented on Sundays

Our Lord! Do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us! Grant us Your special mercy, for You are indeed the Grantor of all bounties.
